Relational Organizing for Political Campaigns
Relational organizing is the practice of reaching voters through the relationships they already have. Instead of relying only on strangers knocking on doors or calling from a phone bank, you ask volunteers to talk to people they know: friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, fellow congregants, or teammates.

Getting Started
Think of UpVote as a top-of-the-line race car: powerful, fast, and built to outperform the competition. But even the best car needs a focused driver behind the wheel. This manual will train you to be that skilled "driver," capable of steering your campaign's relational organizing engine to victory.

Become a Campaign Manager with UpVote Relational Organizing

Opening your UpVote campaign starts with your campaign Settings.

The Settings page controls how your campaign looks in the UpVote app and what volunteers can see and do. These choices shape your entire UpVote program, so it is worth taking a few minutes to review them carefully.

In Settings, you will:

  • Write your Welcome SMS, which is sent automatically to new volunteers

  • Choose whether volunteers can see vote status and the vote progress bar

  • Select which voter fields volunteers can view and which they can edit

  • Decide whether volunteers can add supporters without a phone number

  • Turn Quick Contact Match on or off, we recommend turning it on

  • Choose whether volunteers can use in app chat, or if chat is Admin only

These settings affect two things: how easy the app is for volunteers to use, and how clean and reliable your data will be later in the campaign.

During your onboarding meeting, your UpVote representative will give you specific recommendations so your settings match your GOTV goals.
