Relational Organizing for Political Campaigns
Relational organizing is the practice of reaching voters through the relationships they already have. Instead of relying only on strangers knocking on doors or calling from a phone bank, you ask volunteers to talk to people they know: friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, fellow congregants, or teammates.

Become a Campaign Manager with UpVote Relational Organizing

Custom fields let you add important data points to voter records beyond the basic information in your voter file.

There are two types of custom fields:

Fields populated from your data provider or Board of Elections data

Common examples: Political party and Vote by mail or absentee status

Fields populated by volunteers through conversations

Common examples: Candidate ID and Vote Plan.

To Add a custom field:

  1. Go to the Custom Fields page in the Admin Portal.

  2. Click Add to create a new field.
  3. Choose the field type:
    • Dropdown menu
    • Free text
    • Date
  4. For a dropdown, you will add the options (for example: “Independent”, “Democrat”, “Republican”, “Unaffiliated”).
  5. Set the parameter name
    • Pick a clear, short name like “Party”, “Vote by mail status”, “Candidate ID”, “Vote plan”.

  6. Set visibility options:

    • Show on the voter details card for each contact
    • Show on the main screen of the app under each contact’s name
    • Show during the supporter addition stage (this is only relevant for custom field data you will populate via upload)
