Relational Organizing for Political Campaigns
Relational organizing is the practice of reaching voters through the relationships they already have. Instead of relying only on strangers knocking on doors or calling from a phone bank, you ask volunteers to talk to people they know: friends, family, neighbors, coworkers, fellow congregants, or teammates.

Become a Campaign Manager with UpVote Relational Organizing

UpVote Events are your campaign’s built in event and shift manager, they let you create sign up links, invite people by text, track RSVPs and attendance, and automatically turn participation into organized data in your voter file.

1. Creating a new UpVote Event

  1. Go to the Events page in the Admin Portal.
  2. Click the Add icon to create a new event.
  3. In the window that opens, fill in the basic details

Click Save. The full Event page will open with more options.

2. Customize your event

On the event page you can add inputs and choose custom fields to display.

  • Add Inputs: Inputs are extra fields you can add to the registration form (for example you can ask registrants “Are you eligible to vote?” or “Are you interested in volunteering?”).

    • For each field, choose:
      • Field name
      • Type (text, checkbox, or number)
      • Whether it is required

  • Choose custom fields to display to your callers

    • Showing custom fields for each voter can help your callers tailor their ask
    • You can also require that callers update custom fields based on the information they collect from phone calls

3. Sharing the event and inviting guests

From the Event page you can:

  • Copy the invitation link to share in groups chats, via text, email, Facebook, or on your website.
  • Invite guests directly: Add guests manually, or import a larger guest list from Excel.
  • Event managers: Assign managers who can edit event details and add guests for this event, without giving them full system admin access.
  • Send invitation: Send an SMS invite to all guests. UpVote generates a default text with event details and a registration link, which you can edit.
  • Send reminder: Send a reminder via text, including the option to reschedule for a later time.

You can also Export to Excel to download all guests and their details.

4. Managing the guest list and attendance

When you scroll to the bottom of the Event page you will see the guest list. From here you can:

  1. Mark attendance
  2. Match invitees to the system (Find Match)
    • Because guests do not usually enter their voter ID, UpVote lets you match them to voter records by name, phone, or email.
    • Click Find Match next to a guest’s name.
    • Review the suggested match and check the box to confirm.
    • Once matched:
      • The guest is linked to the voter record.
      • The voter is tagged with the event, documenting their participation.

This turns event attendance into useful supporter data inside your voter file.

You can also export the guest list using Additional Actions -> Export to CSV.

5. UpVote Events Dashboard

UpVote can create and design an all-in-one events landing page that shows all your upcoming shifts, training, and events in chronological order so volunteers can browse easily and sign-up for the ones they are interested in.

  • Voters can see multiple events at once and register for the ones they want.

  • Admins can edit the page details and copy the link for distribution, just like a single event link.
